Sorry it has been a while!!
BIG NEWS! Starting Monday we will be starting BYOD in our classroom. This is when students will Bring Your Own Device to use for educational purposes. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, iPads/iPods that can access the internet are welcome! We will try to use them as much as possible so if they have access to bring one in it will be great. Two papers are being sent home to inform you about this program. Please note that the school is not responsible for lost or broken devices. Each time we leave the room the devices will be locked in a cabinet and the classroom door will also be locked. Students are VERY excited about this possibility!!

Another shortened week! Still preparing for the DCAS, especially with fractions and percents. Please make sure your child is practicing their equivalent chart at home (links to the chart!!) It will really help if they have this base knowledge of how to convert fractions to percents! We have also been working with context clues in ELA. We even made our own minions today!! Students wrote a paragraph using 'minion language' and a partner had to figure out what they were saying based on the clues in the story.
There will be no school next Friday, February 14th. Scholastic book orders are due on the 13th.
Have a great weekend!

More short weeks!! Although it was another short one, we were extremely productive. Students know that DCAS testing is coming up in February and we are working hard to prepare. We are almost done The One and Only Ivan (snow days really have gotten in the way) and are working on using context clues to answer comprehension questions. This is a great strategy to practice at home parents!! Ask your child how the surrounding text can help them find the answer to questions. In math we are working on fractions. We just finished up rotations involving ordering, comparing, and finding equivalent fractions and will start work next week with adding and subtracting fractions. We just began our science unit, Mixtures & Solutions. This is such a fun unit that students really enjoy. We will get to work with different chemicals and elements and discover their properties. It is very important that the students follow directions exactly since we are working with chemicals. They have been warned that they may have to sit out if they cannot handle the materials properly.
Any questions or concerns I am always free and willing to meet or talk with you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! It has been a crazy start to the year with the snow days and "cold" days :)
In Math we are working on fractions and percents and finding equivalent fractions. We will move forward with adding, subtracting, multiplying and even some dividing of fractions!! Content will continue to get harder as the year progresses so it is imperative that students come prepared and focused, READY TO LEARN!!
In Language Arts we are finishing up our second novel, The One and Only Ivan, and will take the Unit assessment shortly. I am very proud of student engagement and effort during our units. The next novel we will read is Walk Two Moons with the focus being on how author's create a story within a story.
Our Industrial Revolution social studies unit is ending shortly and we will return to our Science lesson, focusing on Mixtures and Solutions (definitely a fun one!!)
The last week of January we will have Parent-Teacher conferences. Not all will be requested to attend, if you are, I simply wish to discuss the progress your child is making towards meeting fifth grade standards. I look forward to meeting with you soon!!

The holidays are getting closer!! It has been a great (and very short!) week, though you can tell everyone is ready for break! Also, we would love to have you all at our ABC Awards Assembly the same day, our choir will be performing their medley!
Enjoy your weekend!

It's beginning to feel like the holidays! My favorite time of the year is between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle and most importantly being around my family! It is the best to cuddle up in front of a fire and watch movies and drink hot chocolate!!! :)
This week our new principal Mr. Timm has introduced himself to each classroom and he is so excited to be a part of the Carrie Downie family. Mr. Timm has worked in other schools in the district and we know he is going to be a great addition to Carrie Downie.
It has been a great week as we are starting learning about inventions in Social Studies, fractions and percents in Math and continuing to read The One and Only Ivan in Language Arts. I am so proud and impressed with the student's focus and effort as we get closer to winter break.
Have a wonderful and safe weekend.
Stay warm!!

We had an awesome time at the Philadelphia Zoo yesterday! A sincere THANK YOU to the parents who were able to come and chaperone on our field trip. Next week is a full week but then students are off for a WHOLE WEEK (unfortunately not us teachers!) Please do not forget your scheduled conference time. I will only be able to meet with you for twenty minutes so promptness is key! I look forward to discussing your child's progress with you. Our partnership in their education will create success :)
Also, please make sure that your child is coming to school with a heavy winter jacket. Temperatures quickly dropped (where was the fall weather??) If they do not have a winter jacket we have a wonderful program where our FCT, Ms. Alston, will provide a jacket to families in need. You can reach out to me, Mrs. Kane, or Ms. Alston, we are all here to support our families!
Enjoy your weekend!

My goodness I have slipped on updating our weekly news! My apologies. This has been a busy and really great month! We are almost finished our first novel The Perilous Road, which is a great story about a boy during the Civil War. I encourage you to have discussions with your child about this exciting book.
We just finished Unit 1 in Math which we learned/reviewed multiplication and division strategies. This is a tough skill for many that we will continue to practice throughout the year. Please have your child work on their multiplication and division facts at home. It is really important and is seen in all aspect of mathematics! We just began Unit 2, which focuses on Prisms and Pyramids (2D & 3D shapes).
In science we are studying Ecosystems. (Once and hopefully soon!!!) our plants grow, we will get crickets and isopods, as well as mosquito fish and snails for our aquariums. We study all about the environment and then how things can end up harming them.
It really is starting to get chilly out (FINALLY!) so please make sure you send your child in a jacket! If you are in need of one you can always call or email me or send your child in with a note. Our family crisis therapist, Ms. Alston, gives coats out every year to those that need them!!
As always have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Bossert
P.S. Book reports are due November 4th (both parts- report and projects)

It was a great week! We started our novel study, The Perilous Road, in ELA that connects our Social Studies focus of the Civil War. Students are doing a great job making connections and engaging in the content. We have been working on multiplication in math. I am very impressed at some skills I see! As always it is imperative that your child knows their multiplication and division tables by heart!!! On Wednesday our principal, Mrs. Guy, came into the room to observe and she was extremely impressed with the students' focus and ownership of their work! Next week is the start of October (probably my favorite month :) ) and we will be switching team tables and learning with a new group of friends.
Have a wonderful weekend and GO BLUE HENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a very productive week! We took the Reading and Math DCAS on Tuesday and Wednesday. I will give you your students scores on our Friday Report next week. It is always important to remember that this is Fall and many of the questions are fifth grade material. Scores will get better and there is no where to go but up!! :)
Today (Thursday) we had our first ABC Awards assembly. It was a great time celebrating student achievement! I was extremely proud to see each student clapping and cheering for their classmates. We also had a visitor from the Ned Show. This spunky (yo-yo) gal shared the importance of hard work if students want to become champions.
